Welcome to ITG's Home
Pages
This website is a page where
students might find some useful stuff for their study purposes in
addition to any 'forum' or such official stuff. So this is a gift
and not part of any 'official provision' unless the
subject outline says otherwise any time (this clause
written in bold may apply to some internal CSU subjects in some
academic sessions).
An obvious first port of call
for those enrolled in CSU subjects I am involved in -the links to
individual subject CSU codes (found below). In addition there is
more stuff not restricted to any CSU subject outline syllabus on
the links with 'named fields of study',for any who may be
interested.
DOWNLOADS:
- You can download much of
the notes etc. available here as stand alone files to
read later and/or print. IF SO, see if your browser (eg
IExplorer) is attempting to show the material on the
screen to you (eg with pdf files). This is because
nowadays lots of stuff is 'browser integrated' and is
quite annoying I find. If you don't want this and just
want to download the file to your own computer hard
disc, then RIGHT CLICK and "SAVE AS TARGET",
fill in the details where you want the download file to
be placed, click OK and then wait or go away while it
downloads to your hard disk.
- I have also recently
started making self extracting zip files, and to use these once
downloaded just double click on the file (an .EXE file) and follow the box
instructions noting you can pick the folder where the
extracted/unzipped files will be sent to.
I also
use and provide as download material: .PDF files, .RTF or also
.DOC files, .GIF files, .JPG files, PNG files, EPS files, ZIP files, (&.EXE
compressed-for windows),.MCD files. .XLS
files, .TXT files, and .MHT files.
- To make use of such file
types once downloaded, make sure you at least have the
following (you will probably/ may have equivalent
software already installed on your computer.(eg: CSU
computers...except for the MathCad Explorer)):
- An
Image Viewer for GIF and JPG -and just about
every other image type- files MS PhotoEditor is
OK, but consider... "Irfanview"
..it's free and its as good as 'owt else. In
addition it has ability to screen capture and
then save as any image file type..great for
getting around some printing problems especially.
Click
here to get Irfanview

|
- A
basic wordprocessor for RTF files (eg. the
freeware "Atlantis" or some other
freeware will do) if you have no MSWord software
|
- At
least (If not MS Word itself) ...a
"MicrosoftWord Viewer" able to read to
Word 97
|
- At
least (if not Excel itself edn 5 or above) ...the
' Microsoft Excel Viewer' You can also get FREE
spreadsheet software and some of these packages
will be able to read XLS (EXcel files) I believe
PLUS allow you to do spreadsheet analyses.
|
|
|
- The
indispensable "Adobe Acrobat Viewer"..a
(free) essential from Adobe to view PDF format
documents Click on
this icon

|
- Another
very useful tool is the
free MathCad Explorer by MathSoft. Use this nifty
software to READ and mess about with MathCad
documents (only up to version 8 .MCD files
though) and also use the 'Scratchpad' for your
own plots and calculations. UNFORTUNATELY the
makers of this (Mathsoft Inc.) have stopped
providing downloads or any'backup support'.
BUT..I have found one or two sites still
providing an independent download source for it.
So......Click
here
Be
patient though as it is a LARGE download (12.1
MB). [Of course you might consider buying Mathcad
itself, which I would recommend -though it is not
necessary for any CSU subject specifically- now
available as Mathcad 2001.. cost details
etc and maybe free time limited trial version are
available at Mathsoft site (do a search for their
http address)].

- Microsoft
Internet Explorer (use 5 or above-free to
download from MSoft or many other places). You
will need this to view .mht files which are a
single file containing all of the content on a
web page (the htm file PLUS the image files all
'stuck together') . I prefer saving and
distributing web material like this because
otherwise there's hundereds of image files and
folders all over the damn place!
|
- The
'Notebook' installed as standard on Windows 9_ operating
systems or the 'wordpad' also there will let you read and
edit TXT files. There are also a plethora of FREE text
editors (so called) available at the freeware sites. I
myself use 'TextEditor' which is great. You can save alot
of web material (thats not graphics) as TXT files and
they dont gobble up space. Also you can save a text
document as as C /C++ or BAS file (or other fundamental
type files for programming -eg Fortran- if you have a
C/C++ or Basic compiler installed on your computer and
want to program.
I can't be bothered to find some of the links
above just yet..so do a search and get them yourself if
necessary.
- (Feb 2006 note!): In
process of revising much of this website. I am trying to - bit by bit -
convert to open source and free software rather than use and provide (and
hence support) for commercial file types. A lot of the stuff above will no
longer apply eventually. Hopefully most of the stuff I provide will be Linux
and also windows useable, so all students can benefit. The only problem to
date is the superiority of MS Excel in the spreadsheet stakes- that may change
in the next year or so depending on what OOCalc and Gnumeric does.

My Teaching Philosophy, My
Publications, My Research Interests,....My this ..my that ..my Lord.!!..do
you really want to look at this stuff??..it's only here because 'these days'
academics are supposed to advertise themselves like a fast food franchise and
make excuses for their existence. Some people might call it a teaching portfolio
(or some such) I call it balderdash and poppycock personally. Purely for
administrative purposes.
Aurevoir, and
happy studying.
